Residential Training on Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Modeling

About the training

The Central Department of Economics (CEDECON) at Tribhuvan University is collaborating with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) to organize a six-day residential training on Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modeling, from 25 September to 1 October 2026. The training aims to build skills in:

• General equilibrium foundations and the logic behind CGE models
• Building and balancing a Social Accounting Matrix
• The structure of a standard single-country CGE model developed by IFPRI
• Calibration and the choice of model closures
• Running and interpreting policy experiments
• Communicating results to non-technical audiences
• Applied lab work using a sample SAM, and a Nepal SAM where available

CEDECON TU invites applications from Nepali individuals. The training is meant for early-career professionals who use, or expect to use, economy-wide analysis in their work. Applications are particularly encouraged from:

• Early-career economics faculty at Tribhuvan University
• Recent CEDECON/TU graduates whose work has focused specifically on CGE
• Economists and officers at Nepal Rastra Bank, the National Planning Commission, and the Ministry of Finance, Government of Nepal

Applicants should have a background in microeconomics and macroeconomics, and some exposure to quantitative or econometric methods. Familiarity with software such as Stata, R, or GAMS is helpful but not required. Because the programme is residential and builds day on day, applicants need to commit to attending all six days.

The organizers aim for a gender-balanced group of participants. Women economists and researchers from the eligible institutions are encouraged to apply.

2. A short concept note describing the question they want to answer using CGE models

Selection

A committee from the organizing institutions will review the applications. Selection will consider the relevance of the candidate's work, their quantitative background, and their motivation. The decision of the selection committee will be final.

Cost of participation

There is no participation fee for selected candidates. The organizers will cover accommodation (on a room-sharing basis) and main meals for the duration of the training. No additional allowance will be provided to participants.
